Hand-Hewn Dressed Mantel - White Pine, Mahogany Stain/Poly #008 pine Prized by woodworkers for itsThis mantel was sourced sustainably in January 2019 from an old sawn barn beam reclaimed in North Yarmouth, Maine, that I then hand hewed with an axe, hence the "dressed" aspect. It measures 7"x7"x37" and is finished with a Mahogany colored stain poly mix. While water powered sawmills existed in New England as early as 1630 (in Berwick, Maine), hand hewing large beams was a technique favored by many American craftsmen to frame out barns and buildings:
