The main design was inspired by the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge which brings S. Capitol St. over the Anacostia River to Audi Field, the soccer specific stadium which is home to the Washington Spirit and DC United. The interlocking DC in the crest was inspired by the letters carved into the Dumbarton Bridge which spans Rock Creek
